The First Chapter

In 1965, Ratnagiri began with a simple vision rooted in trust, knowledge, and a desire to help people.

Our founder, Late Indra Kumar Chakraborty, opened Ratnagiri at 55/8 Grey Street, nestled in the busy streets of old Calcutta. Grey Street, a remnant of its colonial past, would later be renamed as Aurobinda Sarani.

With the unwavering support and generosity of his wife, Late Minu Chakraborty, he built the foundation of Ratnagiri on a shared commitment to knowledge, trust, and his deep passion for astrology and astral gemstones. At a time when few jewellers specialised in this field, Indra Kumar saw an opportunity to do more than sell gemstones. He wanted to guide people in finding something meaningful.

Over time, that approach built something more valuable than a business, it built trust.
As his sons grew alongside the business, Indra Kumar passed on more than the trade. He taught them to understand the customer behind every astral purchase, respect the meaning jewellery can hold, and build relationships that last beyond a transaction. They eventually took over, becoming the second generation of Ratnagiri.

Growing with the City

In 1995, Ratnagiri opened its second showroom at 96A & 96B Rashbehari Avenue, bringing the family business to South Calcutta.

What began with astral gemstones gradually grew into a broader world of jewellery, including gold, diamonds, silver jewellery, as well as silver artefacts, while our foundation in gemstones and astrology remained at the heart of the brand.

The Story Continues

Today, Ratnagiri is entering its third generation. The next generation is learning from the same values that shaped the business from the beginning.

The city has changed. The jewellery world has changed. The tools have changed. But our values remain evergreen.

From a small shop to our redesigned showrooms in Kolkata, today, Ratnagiri remains a family story; built patiently, passed down carefully, and carried forward with purpose. Our story belongs not only to us, but also to the families who have trusted us, returned to us, celebrated with us, and made Ratnagiri part of their own stories.
